De Hoop: the hope sanctuary

By Andrea Rowlands-Bradfield · 24 August 2020

De Hoop Nature Reserve coastline

Escaping months of routine lockdown living with a magical coastal escape to De Hoop - just an hour off the N2 and three hours from Villa Palmera. It is a treasure house of natural assets not to be missed when you are on the Garden Route.

Top tips

  1. Go in September or October for prime southern right whale viewing.
  2. Book the interpretive marine walk with the activity manager.
  3. Do not wear flip-flops on the marine walk - the rocks are slippery.
  4. Look out for Cape griffon vultures.
  5. Stop at the Malgas pont, a unique hand-drawn ferry across the Breede River.
