Mossel Bay heritage and culture
Mossel Bay was the first place Europeans set foot in South Africa, in 1488, and people had been living here for a hundred thousand years before that. The town wears its history lightly: a museum complex around a tree that was once a post office, stone villas from the 1900s, and communities whose stories are only now being told.
The Dias Museum and the Post Office Tree
A ten-minute walk from Villa Palmera, the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex holds a full-size replica of Dias's caravel, a shell museum and the famous milkwood tree where sailors left letters in a boot from 1500 onwards. You can still post a letter from the boot-shaped post box.
Linkside and the stone villas
Villa Palmera is one of the Edwardian-era stone houses built in Linkside when the harbour brought prosperity to the town. Walk the quiet streets above the harbour and you will find several. Ours was built in 1906 - read its story.
KwaNonqaba and township culture
Much of iOcean Trust's youth work happens in KwaNonqaba, the largest township in Mossel Bay. Guests who want to understand the town beyond the beachfront can ask about community visits and about supporting the trust's programmes.
Food, wine and gin
Mossel Bay has its own gin distillery, wine tastings at the Point, a Saturday market, fresh mussels and line fish along the harbour, and a strong cafe culture. Andrea keeps a current list.
